NEW YORK MEMBER’S NEWS
SUSAN BEE has a book in the exhibition “In Poems & Pictures: A Renaissance in the Art of the Book (1946-1981)”. The show is at The Center for Book Arts, 28 West 27th St., 3rd floor, NY. It is on view through September 11, 2010. This exhibit is curated by Kyle Schlesinger. It will travel to the Museum of Printing History in Texas and a catalog will accompany it.
LIZ BIDDLE will be in a 4 person show at Casa Frela Gallery at 47 West 119th St. in Harlem, NYC from July 31 through September 12, 2010. The Opening Reception is Saturday, July 31 from 4-8 pm and the Closing Party is September 10 from 6-10 pm.
DARIA DOROSH was one of 12 artists selected to participate in the Abbey Mural Workshop on public art led by Grace Graupe Pillard for the month of July at the National Academy of Design on Fifth Avenue in upper Manhattan, NY.
NANCY LASAR is exhibiting her paintings and works on paper in a group show titled “The Nature of it All” at Amy Simon Fine Art in Westport, CT. The show is up now through July 17, 2010.
SHEILA ROSS had her recent solo show at A.I.R. reviewed by the Shambhala Sun, a Buddhist magazine.

DAMALI ABRAMS has a new video piece in a show titled “Ain’t I A Woman” at The Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts at 80 Hanson Place in Brooklyn, NY. The show is curated by Kimberli Gant. It is on view from July 15 through December 19, 2010.
SUZANNE BROUGHEL has work in a group show titled “Model Home” now through August 31, 2010 at Roger Smith Hotel Gallery, 16th Fl. at 501 Lexington Avenue, NY. The show represents the work of 8 women of the New York based tART collective. There is an Opening Reception on July 28 from 5:30-8:30 pm. Suzanne has also had her work added to the Smack Mellon website for Hot Picks 2010.
JIYOON KOO has an abstract painting in “Subtle Anxiety: This Is How You Feel” at Doosan Gallery in New York. The show is up from July 15 through August 14, 2010.
ANITA RAGUSA has a drawing in a group show titled “Graphomania” at the Garbageman/Astronaut Project Space at the Everett Station Lofts at 625 NW Everett St. #107 in Portland, OR. The show is up through July 29, 2010.

NANCY AZARA is giving summer 2010 workshops in the arts. One is at Truro Center for the Arts in Massachusetts titled “The Spiritual Side: Painting & Sculpture” from July 26-30, 9 am to noon. Another workshop is at the Women’s Studio Workshop in Rosendale, NY titled “Rubbings & Tracings as Memoir" from August 16-20.Nancy will also give a “Visual Diaries Workshop at her Woodstock, NY studio on Saturday, August 7. nancy@nancyazara.com
KATHY DOLGY LUDWIG has her painting Brooklyn Funk Universe in a juried show opening at Soho 20 Gallery in Chelsea now chosen by Phong Bui. This painting is now the cover of Humanus, NYU Human Rights Journal. The show will be up from July 20 –August 14, 2010. Soho 20 is at 547 West 27th St., NYC, suite 301.
ADRIENNE HEINRICH has won 2 juror’s awards in the AAP Annual Exhibition at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, PA. The show opens July 23 through late September 2010. Her work will also be installed in the Frank Lloyd Wright’s creation Fallingwater in PA now through November 2010.

“How important has your formal education been to your art career?”
Answers:
“In response to your question; 50% of my “formal” education has contributed to my art career. The good ½ (of that 50%) has been in terms of my discipline + inspiration. The bad ½ has been in terms of disappointment + gender discrimination, large.”
“I think that for me one of the most important aspects of my formal education was to discover that there was a community of others like myself who lived to make art. The educational environment was a validation and gave me the sense of belonging to a community of art through the ages. This kind of support is equal to any formal art training that schools provide. It also taught me the importance of context to art.”
“My formal education at Rhode Island School of Design from 1963-1968 was very important to my art career and to my image of myself as an artist.”
“My education includes Art Students League and National Academy to the State and City University for my Bachelor’s and MFA. Each program helped in some way with perception, technique, concepts and theory. My non -art classes helped as much as the art courses did.”

JEE HWANG is now part of the exhibition “From the Tongue” a show of works on paper or fiber exploring text and language at the 34 North Moore Street/Lotus Gallery Space in Tribeca, NY. The show is curated by Joetta Maue. This exhibition is on view through August 6, 2010. Jee will also be in “Non-Native New York” at the De Castellane Gallery on 525 Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn, NY from August 5 through August 22, 2010. This show focuses on the cultural contributions of foreign born artists in Brooklyn. There will be an Opening Reception on August 5 from 6-9 pm. (Check out the interview with Jee!)
